At Mountain House, our roots can be traced back to meals created during the Vietnam Conflict, when the military sought food that tasted better and lasted longer. We immediately began producing freeze-dried food as Long Range Patrol rations for the military, and have continued to provide food for the United States Special Forces and other branches of the military ever since.

As the war started to wind down, we took our surplus rations to military surplus and sporting goods stores, and it was then in 1969 that we realized the demand for good-tasting, easy-to-prepare freeze-dried food. This was the birth of Mountain House.
